Dalam kondisi tertentu dimana suatu instalasi atau peralatan diharapkan dapat tetap dioperasikan walaupun telah melewati umur layan desainnya. BU/BUT dapat tetap menggunakan Instalasi dan/atau peralatan yang telah melewati batas umur layan desain (design life) tersebut setelah sebelumnya terlebih dahulu melakukan penilaian perpanjangan sisa umur layan (residual life assessment) dengan memperhatikan kaidah keteknikan yang baik sesuai standar acuan. Hasil penilaian yang menyatakan instalasi atau peralatan yang dapat diperpanjang umur layannya dimana penilaian perpanjangan sisa umur layan tersebut sesuai dengan hasil analisis dengan mengutamakan faktor keselamatan.
Dalam menyajikan penjelasan bagaimana tata cara pelaksanaan residual life assement pada pembahasan ini, metode yang digunakan diawali dengan studi lteratur dari hasil-hasil penelitian sebelumnya, kemudian dianalisa secara deskripsi dengan menggunakan data sekunder yang diperoleh dari peraturan, laporan pemerintah, laporan BU/BUT, Handbook dan sumber di internet. Dari hasil evaluasi dokumen, data lapangan, mekanisme kerusakan dan umur peralatan dapat disusun rencana inspeksi dan interval inspeksi serta remaining life dari peralatan.
Dari hasil analisa dapat disimpulkan bahwa bejana tekan masih dapat diperpanjang umur layannya sampai 20 tahun dengan tekanan desain tidak diturunkan tetap 150 psig.
